Crime and Punishment is a tense psychological thriller and philosophical novel about the limits of human freedom, the price of pride, and the power of repentance. Written in 1866, it remains the most widely read book in the world and is included in most school literature curricula.
Rodion Raskolnikov, a former student living in extreme poverty, is convinced that people are divided into "trembling creatures" (the ordinary) and "those with rights" (the exceptional), who are allowed to break the law for a "higher purpose." To prove his theory, he commits a terrible crime. But the moment the axe falls, the true drama begins: not outside, but within. Fyodor Dostoevsky transforms St. Petersburg into a labyrinth of mental anguish: stuffy closets, bridges, and foggy streets—all reflect Raskolnikov's divided consciousness. He is haunted not only by the investigator and the circumstances, but also by his own thoughts, nightmares, images of the victim, and a constant feeling of guilt.
