One quiet November night, an unremarkable family—mother, father, son, and daughter—took a trip to Mount Rakan to see flying saucers together. Flying saucers are only seen by aliens, and the family members had recently learned they were from different planets: the father from Mars, the mother from Jupiter, the son from Mercury, and the daughter from Venus. Now they face an impossible task: save planet Earth from nuclear holocaust in the midst of the Cold War. However, not all aliens secretly living on Earth wish well to their temporary home...
Yukio Mishima (1925–1970) was a star of 20th-century literature, the most widely read Japanese author in the world, a brilliant talent renowned both for his works, which span a wide range and variety of genres (novels, plays, short stories, essays), and for his astonishing biography (an obsession with bodybuilding, extreme right-wing political views, and hara-kiri after a failed coup attempt). "Beautiful Star" is his only work of science fiction, written partly inspired by Arthur C. Clarke and partly in the tradition of Noh theater, and Mishima himself considered it one of his best novels.
In 2017, the novel was successfully adapted into a film by Japanese director Daihachi Yoshida, starring Ai Hashimoto and Kazuya Kamenashi. In "Beautiful Star," aliens who have cast aside the illusion of their earthly existence look down upon humanity from cosmic heights, and while not all of them are benevolent, there is still hope for humanity.
