The 72nd volume of the Orthodox Encyclopedia continues the publication of articles with the letter "F". It opens with an article on the Byzantine church-political figure Theophanes the Confessor, author of the "Chronography", the most important source on the history of the late Roman state and Byzantium up to the 9th century. The revival of the historical tradition of the Byzantine Empire is connected with this, the only known work of Theophanes the Confessor. Volume 72 concludes with an article on Thomas, the present Archbishop of Odintsovo and Krasnogorsk.

"Orthodox Encyclopedia" is a specialized reference edition, setting itself two tasks:

- to give comprehensive information on the two-thousand-year history and current state of universal Orthodoxy;
- to familiarize the reader with other Christian confessions, non-Christian religions, as well as with the phenomena of science, culture, philosophy, art, politics, in one way or another related to religion.
The encyclopedia pays special attention to church life in the 20th century, information about which is practically absent in reference literature. Scripture, sacred history, and biblical studies are represented by articles on persons named in the Bible, geography and archaeology of the Holy Land, biblical theology, biblical codices, heresies related to Bible interpretation, and articles on major erzegetes. The patristic heritage is examined in articles on the church fathers and teachers. Articles on church art are devoted to iconography, iconography, and church architecture, and also give an idea of some of the outstanding iconographers, architects, and secular painters who addressed Christian themes in their work.

The encyclopedia details the Russian Orthodox Church, the Ancient Church, Ancient Churches, the Roman Catholic Church, Protestant churches and movements, and more.
