Orthodox Encyclopedia. Volume LXXV
Volume 75 of the Orthodox Encyclopedia concludes the publication of articles beginning with the letter "Ш" and includes articles beginning with the letters "Щ," "Ъ," "Ы," "Ь," "Э," "Ю," and "Я." It opens with an article on Sweden. Volume 75 concludes with an article on the Yashezero-Ionin Shokshin Monastery in Honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Orthodox Encyclopedia is a specialized reference publication with two objectives:
- to provide comprehensive information on the two-thousand-year history and current state of universal Orthodoxy;
- to introduce the reader to other Christian denominations, non-Christian religions, as well as to phenomena in science, culture, philosophy, art, and politics that are in some way related to religion.
The encyclopedia devotes special attention to church life in the 20th century, information about which is virtually absent from reference literature. Holy Scripture, sacred history, and biblical studies are represented by articles on individuals named in the Bible, the geography and archeology of the Holy Land, biblical theology, biblical codes, heresies related to biblical interpretation, and articles on major exegetes. The patristic legacy is examined in articles devoted to the fathers and teachers of the church. Articles on church art cover issues of iconography, icon painting, and church architecture, and also provide insight into individual outstanding icon painters, architects, and secular artists who addressed Christian themes in their work.
