Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) is a genius of Russian literature and a thinker whose name became a legend during his lifetime, and the uniqueness and greatness of his work received recognition throughout the world.
The boldness of the thought of the great artist of words was such that even his outstanding contemporaries could not immediately fully comprehend and accept his innovation.
Tolstoy's creative path is conventionally divided into three periods, each of which reflects his author's ideas and views on the world through discussions about the meaning of life, social problems, the moral state of society, human activity, and the role of art in people's lives. But in the works of the last, third period of creativity (1880-1900), considered the most intense, important and fruitful, the religious and philosophical emphasis acquires special strength, which is largely due to a turning point in the writer's views, his transition to the position of the patriarchal peasantry and his religious ideas associated with this. The central place in the late period of creativity is rightfully occupied by stories. The most significant of them, as well as stories included in the school curriculum and recommended for extracurricular reading, formed the basis of this publication.
