The era of perestroika and the end of the Cold War was a time of rise of the liberal intelligentsia, which found itself at the forefront of the political theater during this period. Why was this rise so short-lived and the fall so dramatic? Guillaume Sauvet's book shows the paradoxical and tragic fate of intellectuals who, by supporting the concentration of power in the hands of an enlightened reformer, contributed to the undermining of their own political project.
The author examines the complex system of relationships between intellectuals and the authorities at the end of the Soviet project, and also reconstructs the system of values within which the main actors of perestroika and democratic reforms operated. The focus is on the polemics within liberal circles, their relationships with nationalists and communists, the fundamental decisions and compromises that supporters of democracy had to make, and other important aspects of the political development of modern Russia.
Guillaume Sauvet is a political scientist and lecturer at the University of Montreal.
