Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was a brilliant American poet, novelist, editor, and literary critic. Poe was born in Boston and was the middle child in a family of traveling actors. His father abandoned the family early, and his mother died of consumption shortly thereafter. The boy was taken in by a childless couple, John and Frances Allan. The adoptive family tried to give him a good education: Poe studied with private tutors, attended school, and at the age of seventeen entered the University of Virginia, where he studied languages and literature. However, he left school and enlisted in the army, where the writer did not stay long and soon became completely absorbed in literary activity. Throughout his life, Poe often experienced financial difficulties, since he sought to earn money exclusively through literary work. For some time, he worked for the Richmond magazine Southern Literary Messenger, where he served as an editor and earned a reputation as a merciless literary critic. However, Poe never had a stable income: bouts of depression and problems with alcohol did not allow the author to hold down one job for long. Poe repeatedly published his works in various magazines: his innovative literary solutions often confused the public. In 1847, the poet's wife died. Grief knocked Poe down and undermined his health. He passed away just two years later under mysterious circumstances: the writer was found delirious in a Baltimore tavern and died a few days later in a hospital of unknown causes. Edgar Poe, whose works were not highly valued by his compatriots during his lifetime, became the first American poet to become famous throughout the world. He made an immeasurable contribution to the development of so-called Gothic literature, anticipated the literature of decadence and became the founder of detective stories. Edgar Allan Poe's work has found a response among many famous writers such as Charles Baudelaire, H. P. Lovecraft, Arthur Doyle, Alexander Blok and Valery Bryusov. This edition presents a complete collection of poems and verses by the great writer. Among them are his most famous poem, "The Raven" (1845), given in several translations, and Poe's very last poem, "Annabel Lee" (1849), written, presumably, in memory of the poet's wife.
The collection is decorated with delightful drawings by William Heath Robinson (1872-1944). This British artist, cartoonist and book illustrator gained worldwide fame. He illustrated the tales of "A Thousand and One Nights", as well as the works of Hans Christian Andersen, William Shakespeare and Charles Kingsley.
