Thanks to his fables, I. A. Krylov gained fame as a classic of Russian literature during his lifetime. Successfully found literary form of fable allowed him to overcome the first unsuccessful verse experiments and fully demonstrate his talents as a writer. Krylov's fables still attract listeners aphoristic concision of the plot, vivid images and colorful language. It is not by chance that many of his lines have become proverbs and winged expressions. Krylov began with translations of La Fontaine, but soon became the author of his own vivid stories. The simplicity of the story, witty details, vivid, figurative verse attracted a variety of listeners to his fables. Some saw in his fables just an amusing anecdote with a simple moral, others were looking for a roll call with the events of his era. Curiously, during his lifetime Ivan Andreyevich was more popular than such famous contemporaries as Pushkin and Gogol. Contrary to the popular fame of an easy essayist, Krylov carefully worked on each of his fables, repeatedly rewriting and changing the text. As a result, small masterpieces appeared, which we admire to this day. The illustrations in this book were made by the wonderful artist Alfons Konstantinovich Zhaba. In the history of painting, he entered as a talented watercolorist, battalist and master of landscape. In 1909, soon after graduating from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, he took part in a hydrographic expedition to the Kola Peninsula. This resulted in a series of paintings of the Far North; these works attracted public attention. Later, the artist became the author of a series of watercolors "Bakhchisarai", as well as paintings on the themes of the army and navy. It is all the more interesting to consider his illustrations in this collection. Their clear contour lines, laconic composition and restraint of color scheme perfectly fit the aphoristic form of Krylov's fables. Toad died in 1942 in besieged Leningrad and was buried in the Serafimovsky Cemetery. The edition includes all of Krylov's fables, epigrams and poems; they were first published in the Complete Collection of his works, published by the "Prosveshchenie" publishing house in 1905. The collection is supplemented with notes to the fables, a note on the poet's unfulfilled creative plans; a complete list of his fables in chronological order is given. The edition is illustrated with drawings by the magnificent Russian artist Alfons Konstantinovich Zhab.
