The French painter Paul Gauguin was once compared by his colleague Edgar Degas to the wolf in de La Fontaine's fable. This hungry vagabond struck up a conversation with a very well-fed dog who was resting after a meal, sprawled out in a peasant's yard. The dog told the skinny and hungry wolf that every day his master fed and cared for him. Such an easy life appealed to the wolf, and he decided to stay with the peasants. But then he saw the chain on which the dog was put. Would he have to sacrifice his freedom too? Never! It was the same for Gauguin.
He left women and children, cut off friendships and gave up a promising career. All for the sake of painting. Life threw Gauguin in different corners of the earth: from England, Denmark and Spain to Martinique, Tahiti and Hiva-Oa, an island in the Pacific Ocean, where he wrote paintings, which after his death made him famous throughout the world. In Gauguin's Grand Atlas, we will travel in the footsteps of the famous artist.
