The novel "Tranquility" (1949) by Turkish writer Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901–1962) is the first example in Turkish literature of a fusion of European modernist techniques and Middle Eastern Muslim literary canons. The action unfolds in Istanbul against the backdrop of significant historical events of the 20th century—the overthrow of the Ottoman dynasty and World War I, the Turkish War of Independence, the founding of the Turkish Republic, and the eve of World War II. The novel's characters grapple with traditional questions of self-definition, attempting to understand where history is leading them and their country—West or East. "Tranquility" is not only a classic work of 20th-century Turkish literature but also opens new horizons for the reader in understanding the beautiful and unique phenomenon of Turkish culture (and the Ottoman culture that underlies it).
