This book is a continuation of two earlier works by L. N. Gumilev - "Hunnu" and "Ancient Turks". It covers one of the little-studied periods in the history of nomadic peoples, reveals the processes that led to the emergence of the Mongol Empire, and the history of the emergence of the "shaker of the Universe" Genghis Khan himself. It is about the history of the Great Steppe from the collapse of the Turkic Khaganate in the 8th century to the formation of the Mongol Empire in the first half of the 13th century. All three books form the "Steppe Trilogy", conceived by the author during his years of study at Leningrad University. At first glance, the book is devoted to a historical curiosity, which is the "kingdom of Prester John" in the center of Asia, invented by the Templars, rumors of which reached medieval Europe in the middle of the 13th century. But behind this curiosity there was hidden a whole era in the history of the nomadic peoples of Central Asia, full of important and dramatic events, the results of which had a huge impact on the entire course of world history. These events gave rise to the legend of Prester John and his kingdom; they are the object of the study.

The book is addressed to all readers who love history with its numerous mysteries and appreciate the author's methods of historical research.
