One of the masterpieces of modernist literature, James Joyce's (1882–1941) novel Ulysses, was first published in its entirety in 1922, and a complete Russian translation only appeared in 1989. This edition introduces readers to a stirring episode in the "Russian Joyceana": in 1934–1935, Leningrad journals published chapters of the novel translated by Valentin Stenich (real name Smetanich, 1897–1938). The "Russian dandy" from Blok's essay of the same name, a close friend of Olesha, translator and personal guide of Dos Passos, poet and wit, one of the brightest stars in the glittering firmament of Russian literature of the 1920s, Stenich ultimately entered the history of Russian culture as a translator. Among the authors he translated into Russian are Kipling and Brecht, Chesterton and Sherwood Anderson. Stenich is the subject of legends and anecdotes remembered by memoirists—Mandelstam, Livshits, Olesha, Chukovsky, Ardov, and others. The afterword by Konstantin Lvov, the compiler of this collection, is dedicated to Stenich's "Works and Days."
