In fairy tales, happiness often turns into misfortune. Andrei, an archer, got a turtledove while hunting, but the bird turned out to be Marya the Princess. Andrei married her and was happy. But the tsar saw Marya and decided to kill her husband in order to take the "unspeakable beauty" for himself. First of all, the tsar sent Andrei the archer to the other world to see his father, then ordered to get a sleepy cat in the Thirtieth Kingdom. And the third "service" turned out to be quite impossible and incomprehensible: to go there - I don't know where, to bring that - I don't know what. But, it is true, only impossible deeds can turn a man into an invincible hero. And tsars are not an order for heroes. Andrei the archer reached an unknown place and got an unseen miracle, and then returned home and dealt with the evil tsar in his own way.
In folklore sources you can find about five variants of this tale. Alexei Tolstoy chose one of the most interesting ones. He carefully processed the original text and, keeping intact "folk language, wit, freshness, originality, the very manner of the story, conversation", managed to make the tale not only more vivid and expressive, but also accessible to children.
