Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? (1971) is one of the most famous art historical essays of modern times, in which Linda Nochlin, exposing the false naivety of the eponymous question and laying the foundations of feminist criticism, explores the hidden social and psychological preconditions that made it impossible for certain social groups, including women, to be awarded the status of “artist genius” throughout most of art history. In this edition, the still relevant 1971 essay is supplemented by its author’s 2006 revision, in which Nochlin analyzes the prospects for the revolution she has outlined, as well as an introduction by the historian of modern art Catherine Grant.
