This collection includes ten essays by Austrian architect Adolf Loos (1870–1933), written between 1898 and 1931. A prolific publicist and sharp-tongued critic of modernist trends in art, Loos was not only an architectural theorist but also a practitioner. These texts explore the work of his colleagues—Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann—as well as his own projects, such as the famous "House Without Eyebrows" on Michaelerplatz in Vienna. Attempting to answer the question "How to live modernly?", the author discusses craft and industrial labor, the limits of creative freedom for architects and artists, and the appearance and functionality of buildings. These bold and forthright reflections, ahead of their time, not only represent Loos's own views but also document the history of architectural transformations in the first third of the 20th century.
