Is history really what we're used to thinking of it as—a universal, unidirectional, and irreversible process, moving from the past through the present into a more or less predictable future? In his book, Achim Landwehr challenges this conception, created by European culture and claiming universality. Using a variety of examples—from calendars and clocks to nuclear waste and the literary experiments of Claude Simon—the author demonstrates that behind the conventional view of history lies a complex interweaving of times, not a transcendent force towering above events. This is a defense of "another historiography"—one that doesn't offer comfort with its certainty, but opens up a space of unrealized possibilities. The book doesn't promise easy answers, but it helps us better navigate a world where time no longer lines up. Achim Landwehr is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Konstanz.
