Aleksei Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1883–1945) was a Russian Soviet writer, author of historical, fantasy, socio-psychological stories, novels and short stories. He was one of the most "titled" writers of his time - the winner of three Stalin Prizes of the first degree. "Peter the Great" (1933-1945) is a historical novel that covers the events of Russia in the period from 1682 to 1704. Alexei Tolstoy began work on the work in 1929, writing it until his death. The author did not have time to bring the narrative in the novel to the end of the reign of the first Russian emperor. This is “... the first real historical novel in our literature. The book is for a long time,” wrote M. Gorky. Just as in the epic novel of his relative Leo Tolstoy "War and Peace", Alexei Tolstoy in "Peter the Great" shows epoch-making historical pictures and the life of ordinary people. It is this literary device that makes the novel exciting and interesting.
