In the 1830s, Gogol began to regard St. Petersburg as a strange familiarity: everything seemed orderly, the façade gleamed, but behind it lay some kind of devilry. The city here is not just a backdrop, but a protagonist—gloomy, mysterious, and slightly off-kilter. Here, a nose wanders without a master, rank is more important than personality, and common sense gives way to absurdity.
The title "St. Petersburg Tales" was suggested by literary scholar Vladimir Shenrok in the late 19th century, and the series was published separately only in 1924. So the journey for these stories to their own "cover" was long, but quintessentially Gogolian—with twists and turns and hidden meanings.
