The book by cultural critic Daria Zhurkova is one of the first large-scale studies of Soviet and Russian popular music of the 1980s-1990s. The question in the title is not without irony: the author criticizes the widespread neglect of pop music in the intellectual environment, showing how entertainment music culture became a barometer of social and political moods in a turbulent era. The book pays special attention to the aesthetic analysis of pop music, as well as its visual expression in music videos and TV programs of the time. At the same time, the researcher does not limit herself to the stated historical period, analyzing the nostalgic reinterpretation of the heritage of perestroika culture in the pop music of recent decades. The result is a multifaceted study that demonstrates how deeply "non-serious" music reflects on both history and the present. Daria Zhurkova is a candidate of cultural studies, senior researcher at the State Institute of Art History.
