The collection "Songs of the Ainu Gods" ("Ainu Shin'yoshu") was compiled and recorded by a young woman, Chiri Yukie (1903–1922), the daughter of an Ainu woman from the Chikafumi community in Hokkaido. She lived for just under twenty years, but managed to accomplish a true feat—she saved from oblivion the unique epic poetry of the Ainu, one of the most mysterious peoples on earth. They never had a written language, and if not for their young fellow tribeswoman, the world would never have known the strange and beautiful songs of the Ainu gods... This book is based on the first Russian translation of all thirteen "divine" songs of the Ainu, included in "Ainu Shin'yoshu." The book is preceded by an extensive introductory article, which details all aspects of the life and beliefs of this amazing people.
