William McGovern was a political scientist, anthropologist, journalist and adventurer. A polyglot who spoke more than a dozen languages. One of the prototypes of the hero of the famous Indiana Jones movie franchise. He began traveling at the age of six weeks old, visiting Mexico with his mother "just to see the revolution." He spent his childhood and teenage years in Asia, earning a soro, i.e. doctorate in theology, from a Buddhist monastery at the age of 20. He studied at the Sorbonne and the University of Berlin, earned a doctorate in philology at Oxford, and taught Chinese in London.
This book is a diary account of his first great adventure, a secret trip to Lhasa, the spiritual and political capital of Tibet, which was then forbidden to all foreigners. The author became one of the first white men who were able to enter Lhasa without having to say goodbye to his life.
