The book by the outstanding Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen is dedicated to his 1912 expedition on the sailing-motor yacht "Veslemö" along the coast of Spitsbergen. The book was published in Russian in 1938 in the publishing house Glavsevmorput with a foreword by the Soviet oceanologist, geophysicist and Arctic researcher V.Yu.Vize.
In the description of the voyage to Spitsbergen Nansen appears before the reading audience not only as a scientist, equally well oriented in the issues of oceanography, hydrobiology, geomorphology and a number of other disciplines, but also as an outstanding writer and a talented artist. Most of the illustrations for this book were made by Nansen himself. Each reader can find in the book what he is interested in: colorful descriptions of nature, reflections on the reasons for the disappearance of walruses and whales in the coastal waters of Spitsbergen, on climate change in the archipelago, on the development of coal mines, on the peculiarities of the geological structure, on the various forms of the surface of Spitsbergen. Nansen does not bypass the tragic fate of the German expedition Schroeder-Strantz and the Russian expedition Rusanov, with whom he missed by only a few days. Had this meeting happened - and perhaps the tragic outcome of these expeditions could have been avoided. This edition continues the series of books "Polar Classics".
