Honoré de Balzac was a great French writer from whom, as Leo Tolstoy defined it, "at that time everyone learned to write". In numerous novels of his "Human Comedy" he recreated a motley, cruel and diverse world, reflecting the life of all classes of modern society. The book "Mischievous Stories" stands apart in the work of Balzac. It is a collection of playful and funny short stories, stylized under Boccaccio and Rabelais, in which - in contrast to the fashionable at the time of the sad romantic motifs - resurrected Gallic liveliness and fun, and the action moved to the distant past. Bright, unusual plots, descriptions of refined love affairs, incredible adventures, expressive characters (many of whom are real historical figures, including monarchs and promiscuous women) and great humor provided "Naughty Stories", despite the indignant accusations of critics in obscenity, undying popularity among a wide mass of readers.
This edition includes all of Balzac's "mischievous stories," including five stories not published during the author's lifetime. The texts are accompanied by illustrations by Gustave Doré (1832-1883), whose magnificent, vivid depictions of the characters in Naughty Stories remain unsurpassed. The edition also includes a set of illustrations by American artist Ralph Barton (1891-1931) and selected illustrations by French artist Albert Robide (1848-1926), which have never been published in Russia.
