The brief period of the Thaw is one of the most significant, but at the same time contradictory and poorly studied in Soviet history.
"The cult of personality is splattered with mud, / But in the fortieth year / The cult of evil and the cult of monotony / Are still in vogue," Boris Pasternak responded to historical trends in May 1956. Sergei Chuprinin's book is organized as a chronicle of the main events that took place in Russian culture from March 1953 to August 1968. Their commentators are either direct participants or eyewitnesses and contemporaries, whose testimonies are presented in diaries, letters, memoirs and archival publications. The culture of the Thaw era, seen against a broad socio-political background, comes to life here both in dialog with the expectations of Soviet society and in dramatic conflict with state totalitarianism and official uniformity.
