The book by the famous Russian medievalist and Byzantinist S. P. Karpov contains his research on the history of the Italian trading posts of the Black Sea region and the Golden Horde and is a logical continuation of his collection of works "Latin Romania". It comprehensively examines the methods of colonization of Genoa and Venice in the Crimea and the Azov region, the practice of judicial regulation of legal relations in trading posts, the status of Italian settlements on the territory of the Golden Horde. Based on newly discovered sources from Italian archives, the author studies the history of diplomatic relations, crises and conflicts that affected the territories of the Golden Horde, Anatolia and Georgia. Emphasis is placed on the transformation of the priorities of trade and politics of the Italian maritime republics, which were increasingly integrated into the complex and contradictory world of the Horde realities. The ethno-demographic problems, life and customs of the Italian trading posts of the Black Sea region are also studied, primarily based on materials related to the history of Tana (Azov) in the 14th-15th centuries.
Particular attention is paid to the history of the slave trade in the region, the characteristics of the ethnic and age-sex composition of slaves, changes in the direction of the slave trade flows and in the cost of slaves during the 14th-15th centuries.
The book also includes articles by the author in foreign languages previously published in relatively inaccessible foreign publications.
The book is intended for specialists in medieval studies, Byzantinists, orientalists, students and teachers of humanities faculties of universities, as well as the widest range of readers.
