In Brazil, Monteiro Lobato is known as a serious public figure. He was a lawyer, trade attaché at the Brazilian consulate in the United States, and later devoted himself to modernizing the Brazilian economy. Who would have thought that such a busy man would find time to write books for children. However, Monteiro Lobato became a classic of children's literature during his lifetime, and his "The Order of the Yellow Woodpecker" is the most favorite book for children in Latin America and beyond. When inventing this story, he recalled his childhood, his grandfather's country house, where in the garden flowed a stream with happy fish, and around was a tropical forest, where, probably, there were jaguars. And there was also a library with books of fairy tales, the characters of which later sneaked into Monteiro Lobatu's book. The Order of the Yellow Woodpecker is a secret society founded by a girl named Lucia, nicknamed Nosishka, and her brother. Members include the rag doll Emilia, whom Dr. Snail taught to speak, Rabico the piglet (actually an enchanted marquis), and the great scientist Don Cornuso, made from a corn cob. Adults, too, could join this society if they believed that Prince Silverfish and an escaped rhinoceros from the circus could come to visit, and that dolls could talk and even write memoirs. Soon, however, Lucia's grandmother and her old nanny become convinced that real miracles can happen in life. For children of primary school age.
