The novel "The Precipice," first published in 1869, caused a terrible scandal in Russian literary circles: Turgenev openly accused the author of borrowing his motifs and even entire plot lines. Goncharov, meanwhile, responded by accusing Turgenev of plagiarizing "The Precipice," which he had read in manuscript form. A beautiful young widow is having an affair with another man, while Marfinka, the young ward of Boris's grandmother, the landowner Berezhkova, prefers a quiet family life with a positive and wealthy young admirer. When Marfinka's older sister, the mysterious and withdrawn Vera, returns to Berezhkova's Malinovka estate, events take a completely different turn—the unsuccessful seducer Raisky falls in love with her, truly and earnestly...
