Johann Arndt's book "On True Christianity" was most widely distributed in Russia in the 18th and early 20th centuries. From 1735, when the first translation into Slavic-Russian by Simon Todorsky (1701-1754), the future Archbishop of Pskov, Izborsk and Narva, was published until 1906, it was translated into Russian four more times and published many times. "On True Christianity" was highly appreciated by St. Tikhon of Zadonsk (his statement is known: "After the Bible, one should read Arndt, and other books are like visiting a guest") and by Rev. Makary Glukharyov. Prot. George Florovsky wrote that Arndt was recognized in Russia earlier than the Dobrotolubie, which is the basis of the importance of this book for the development of spiritual life in our country: for the Russian reader it was perhaps the only spiritual and edifying book, filled with the spirit of the Church's, not other, mysticism (Arndt relied largely on the writings of the Holy Fathers, especially St. Macarius the Great, which were not yet published in Russia at that time). The 1875 edition, which had a censorship permit of September 14, 1874 (the censor was Archimandrite Arseny), was "approved by the Education Committee of the Ministry of Public Education for the student libraries of secondary educational institutions and elementary rural schools".
The proposed translation of lgr. Peter (Meshcherinov) is a revision of the last Russian translation of 1906. At least 50% of the text has been re-translated, all verso have been revealed, inaccuracies and errors have been corrected. Thus, the publication of this book will introduce into modern circulation traditionally read and approved by the Orthodox Church, both in the person of its saints and the official censorship, one of the best and most popular spiritual edifying books from the treasury of world Christianity.
