On Voyages to Other Worlds in Medieval Ireland: Research and Texts

The publication is based on commented translations of tales of visits to the other world in the medieval Irish tradition, among them a scholarly translation of the famous Latin "The Voyage of St. Brendan", published in Russian for the first time. A number of other texts, belonging to the monastic and Christian tradition, but undoubtedly adjoining the legends of pagan Ancient Ireland, show the continuity of the system of images and motifs.
The published studies have been prepared especially for this edition and pursue the same goal: to show the continuity of traditions. The theme of visits to the Other World - as a world both postmortal and parallel to the earthly world - appears in them as a network of intertwined motifs that find their parallels both with ancient mythology and with tales of the search for the Promised Land in the early Christian tradition. The localization of the Other World in medieval Ireland is thus presented as a philosophical problem.
