In his essay "On Photography," the prominent German media theorist Vilém Flusser asks whether human freedom is possible in the information society, in a world where machines dominate and our thoughts, feelings, desires, and actions are robotized. The photographer's intentions are inscribed in the strictly limited corridor of the camera's program - a black box that simulates thinking - so man and machine merge into one. According to Flusser, the philosophy of photography becomes the starting point for any reflection on the contemporary and future existence of man; it is called upon to open up space for the artist's freedom - the freedom to play against the machine.

In this edition, the essay is supplemented by an afterword by philosopher and cultural scientist Vitaly Kurennoy.
