Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev (1873-1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize. He was nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on Russian spirituality. While in exile, "not for a moment in his spiritual turmoil did he cease to think about Russia and be tormented by its misfortunes."

The novel "Nanny from Moscow," written from the perspective of an elderly Russian woman, tells the story of the turbulent pre-revolutionary period. The protagonist, Daria Stepanovna, accompanies her ward, Ekaterina, during their flight from Bolshevik rule to Crimea, and then on numerous journeys from country to country, to India, the United States, and Europe. Only unwavering faith gives this deeply religious woman the strength to overcome all the hardships of life in exile and remain on the path of virtue.
