Deborah Feldman grew up in the ultra-Orthodox Satmar Hasidic community in Brooklyn, New York. This is the strictest and most conservative branch of modern Judaism: it is forbidden to read non-religious books, speak English, wear modern clothes, use the Internet, receive secular education, watch movies, attend the theater and the library. All areas of life for community members (and women especially) are strictly regulated by religious precepts; the laws of the secular state are almost irrelevant. At 17, Deborah is married off to a man she has known for only half an hour - not surprisingly, the marriage does not bring happiness. Becoming a mother at the age of 19, Feldman realizes that now not only her future and freedom are at risk, and decides to completely change her life. She makes an escape plan, gradually expands her world - reading secular literature in English, learning to drive, going to university - and eventually leaves the community. Deborah Feldman is now a writer, living in Berlin with her son. Her autobiography has become an international bestseller and is the basis for the acclaimed Netflix series Unorthodox.
