Friedrich Meinecke (1862–1954) was one of the greatest German historians of his time. The book contains a deep analysis of the causes of the national tragedy experienced by the Germans in the XX century. Unlike Karl Jaspers, who has explored guilt and responsibility, Meinecke has other questions. Was Hitler’s rise to power accidental or inevitable? Does the Third Reich have deep roots in the German past? Is Nazism finally dead or is there a risk of its return to the historical scene? And finally, do Germans, amidst devastation and humiliation, have hope for a better life? These questions preoccupied many educated Germans in the early postwar months and years. That is why Meineke’s book, which appeared in 1946, became a bestseller, having survived several publications in a row.
