Until recently, toys were considered children's toys, not to be taken seriously. However, Evgeny Smirnov's book, dedicated to Soviet toys from the 1930s to 1950s, offers a different perspective on this phenomenon. It presents toys as full-fledged historical objects, placed in the far-from-toyish, and sometimes quite dramatic, contexts of the first half of the 20th century. Combining art historical and socio-anthropological approaches, the author reveals a new side to the subject of his research—not simply as a material sign of the times, but as a monument of an era imbued with artistic, ideological, and historical meanings.

Evgeny Smirnov is an independent researcher and curator, collector, historian of Soviet (1920s–1950s) and Western European toys (19th–first half of the 20th centuries), professional translator, teacher, and top manager. He has authored approximately 50 publications in Russian and international specialized journals.
