Hiroo Onoda (March 19, 1922 --April 16, 2014) was a lieutenant in the Army of the Empire of Japan who fought against U.S. and allied forces on the island of Lubang, Philippines, during World War II, and continued guerrilla warfare there until 1974, refusing to believe the war was over. He did not stop fighting, following orders to hold out until Japanese troops arrived again. On March 10, 1974, after his commander arrived in Lubang and read orders to end the war and all hostilities, H. Onoda surrendered to Philippine authorities and was honorably discharged to Japan. The activity of H. Onoda is considered as a model of military duty, fortitude and honor. This book is a Russian translation of H. Onoda's memoirs. )
