Adventure novel "Island of Lost Ships" was completed by Alexander Romanovich Belyaev by 1926 and published in parts in the magazine "World Pathfinder". A separate edition of the novel was published in 1927. This work has not without reason become a classic of Soviet science fiction. Exotic place of action - distant and mysterious Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic, the hulks of ancient ships, a German submarine, incredible adventures of colorful characters from the capitalist world, among whom were a detective, a criminal, the daughter of a billionaire - all this made a strong impression on the Soviet reader in the first third of the twentieth century. In our days, "The Island of Lost Ships" is read with no less interest. It is no coincidence that in the last quarter of the twentieth century on the basis of this novel was filmed musical and movie-antiutopia. This collection includes other works of the writer, thanks to which Belyaev became deservedly considered one of the founders of Soviet fiction. Among them are the famous novel "The Amphibian Man", the story "Professor Dowel's Head" and many other works known far beyond the borders of Russia.
His way into literature Belyaev began with reports on theater productions. He wrote about musical premieres, published feuilletons. Success came when Belyaev was already in his forties. Herbert Wells wrote that a little jealous of the success of his novels, and they before the war was created a lot. In the thirties Belyaev became fascinated with space. He began to correspond with Tsiolkovsky and dedicated his novel "The Star of the KEC" to him. Belyaev's last lifetime book was the novel "Ariel". It was published shortly before the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. In the twenties of the twentieth century, Belyaev actively cooperated with the magazines "World Pathfinder", "The Struggle of Worlds" and "Around the World". Many of his works were first printed on their pages, only later coming out as separate books. In this edition, all texts of Belyaev's works are given in their original magazine versions, which often differ from the versions included in the writer's collected works. Sometimes in the magazines there is a different ending as, for example, in "The Head of Professor Dowel". As illustrations for the book used drawings from the first magazine publications of novels and stories of the writer. In this respect, this edition is unique - it allows fans of Belyaev's fiction to feel the same emotions and impressions that the first readers of his novelizations in periodicals received, to become owners of rare texts and illustrations.
