The Soviet Union experienced another turning point from 1953 to 1964. It was during this time that processes began that significantly transformed Soviet society. A rift emerged between the heroic, romantic revolutionaries and the pragmatic bourgeois who craved immediate prosperity. The authorities tried to straddle both worlds and ultimately fell between them.
Was this unexpected fact the result of Khrushchev's leadership's mistakes or inevitable historical patterns? This is precisely what we will attempt to understand. The book also offers essays on prominent legal scholars of the time and the codification of the complex legislation inherited from the Leninist and Stalinist eras.
Following earlier researchers, we call this period the "thaw," dividing it into four important periods. The first is Stalin's death, collective leadership, and the struggle for power (1953–1954). The second was the seizure of power and its concentration under Khrushchev (1954–1956). The third was the so-called exposure of Stalin's personality cult, the abandonment of the practice of mass repression after the 20th Congress of the CPSU, and the subsequent "removal of the body" from the mausoleum on Red Square (February 1956 – October 31, 1961). The fourth was before Khrushchev's removal (late 1961 – 1964).
