Shimazaki rose to fame with the publication of his novel "Hakai" ("Broken Testament") in 1904-1905, which addressed the issue of social inequality—the Japanese belonging to the outcast caste, or "eta." Shimazaki Toson (1872-1943) graduated from the Christian Meiji Gakuin University. Together with Tokoku Kitamura, he published the literary magazine "Bungakukai." He made a significant contribution to the development of naturalism in Japan. His father, Masaki Shimazaki, was a scholar. In 1899, Shimazaki and his wife moved from the capital to the remote provinces. For seven years, he taught in a rural school in northern Japan. During these years, he witnessed the monotony and tedium of rural life, which later became the subject of many of his works. He was baptized, but Christianity had no significant influence on him. The historical merit of the poet Shimazaki in the history of Japanese poetry is that he (together with Doi Bansui) finally established in Japan the form of the so-called “new verse” (shintaishi), which sharply broke with the traditions of feudal poetry and turned into the main type of new Japanese poetry.
