Anatoly Bukreev (1958-1997) - one of the strongest mountaineers in the world, who climbed the highest mountains of the planet 18 times. He made almost all his ascents without the use of artificial oxygen. His name became widely known after the tragedy on Everest in May 1996, when the participants of several commercial expeditions on the mountain were caught in a storm. Boukreev rescued three people. This unprecedented story later formed the basis of the movie Everest, directed by Baltazar Kormakur in 2015. The fate of the diaries is quite unusual. They first saw the light of day in the United States in English shortly after Bukreev's death. They were published by the mountaineer's friend Linda Wiley. Now the original diaries, expanded and supplemented, are available for Russian-speaking readers. They are supplemented with the memories of Italian mountaineer Simone Moro, a partner and participant of Bukreev's last expedition. What does mountaineering mean for the mountaineers themselves? Do mountains conquer or can they only be climbed? What is the cost of human life at an altitude of eight kilometers? Oxygen cylinder in the "death zone" - a guarantee of safety or an illusion? Anatoly Bukreev gives answers to these and many other questions.
