When Hitler ordered the massive bombing of Moscow in mid-July 1941, he intended to bring the Soviet Union to its knees by destroying the country's main administrative, economic, and transportation center. However, his plan met with active resistance from fighters, antiaircraft gunners, local air defense forces, and the city's civilian population. A fierce battle unfolded in the skies above Moscow from August to November 1941, ending in defeat for the Luftwaffe. The last bombs fell on the capital in April 1942. This new book examines the construction of Moscow's air and air defense systems in the pre-war and wartime periods, the role of the metro and special defensive structures, the evolution of Germany's "operational air war," which included the raids on Moscow, and describes the course of the fighting. For the first time, specialists have compiled and analyzed numerous documents from various archives, historical materials from both sides, and the recollections of those involved. This publication was prepared as part of the project "Moscow under Bombs 1941–1943" with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund.
