There is a common perception that Soviet mass culture during the Brezhnev era was boring and formulaic. Christine Evans, in her study of Soviet Central Television, based on extensive archival sources, interviews and television recordings, challenges this thesis. The author traces the history of Central Television in the Soviet Union from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s, analyzing Soviet news programs, serial films, and game shows and identifying in them manifestations of play, conflict, and rivalry. The researcher demonstrates that the most popular programs on Soviet central television were experimental and creative; she argues that they laid the groundwork for Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms and the post-Soviet media system, and prepared for and anticipated the Russian television era. Christine Evans is Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
