"Memoirs" Catherine II the Great (1729-1796) - the central work in the literary heritage of the outstanding Russian statesman. At the same time, it is also the brightest document of the Age of Enlightenment, which put forward the requirement of the value of human life as one of the most important conditions for the development of mankind. In the three books of memoirs, written at different times, the outstanding figure of the future empress appears in full growth: from the notes of 1756, when Catherine, still a grand duchess, was making her first steps as an independent politician, to the memoirs of 1771, which the monarchial status of the author did not prevent to put on the relaxed form of a friendly message, and to the last memoirs, begun in 1790, at the end of a long and glorious reign (1762-1796 years.), which grateful descendants will call the "golden age" of the Russian Empire. Extraordinarily interesting is Catherine's keen eye on those who by the will of fate were destined to rule the fate of Russia, both bright and mediocre figures, in the interiors of palaces, on hunting, masquerade balls and church liturgy, on riding from the mountains, on the fire of the palace. And behind all these scenes appears as if "through a dim glass" expressive portrait of the illustrious Empress. The new translation of "Memoirs", made especially for this edition by E.V. Morozova, a remarkable Russian master, a specialist in the "gallant age", is designed to replace the pre-revolutionary translation, too heavy, not conveying many of the nuances of the French original. The "Supplements" section includes the pearls of the epistolary heritage of Grand Duchess Catherine Alexeevna, the future autocrat, revealing unexpected sides of her character: friendly and trusting messages to the governess E. Cardel (1712-1764). Cardel (1712-1764), never published before; correspondence with the English ambassador Ch. Hanbury-Williams (1708-1759); notes to her lover - Z.G. Chernyshyov (1722-1784), filled with light coquetry and secular witticisms, and his only surviving letter to the luminous correspondent. The edition is prepared by leading specialists: M.A. Kryuchkova, head of the historical department of the museum "New Jerusalem", candidate of historical sciences, who devoted many years to the study of "Memoirs" of Catherine II, who wrote a historical article for this edition and compiled a detailed commentary and detailed indexes, as well as T.I. Akimova, professor of the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature of Mordovian State University, doctor of philological sciences, the only Russian expert on the literary heritage of the Russian Empress. The book is beautifully designed, contains luxurious illustrative material.
