Written in Sorrow is an autobiographical narrative by Mrs. Hong (1735-1815), widow of Prince Sado (1735-1762), who was executed in 1762 on the orders of his own father, Yongjo-wan (reigned 1724-1776). The text consists of four books written in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Mrs. Hong writes about her family, her difficult life in the palace, court intrigues, Prince Sado's illness, and other circumstances leading to tragedy. She addresses her notes to her nephew, Hong Suyong (1755-?), and grandson, Wang Sunjo, wanting to tell the truth about the events of those years and to instruct her descendants.
