The War of the Spanish Succession continued from 1707 to 1710. Although there was a lull in the fighting, and the first peace negotiations between the opposing sides took place (in the spring and summer of 1710 at Geertruidenberg), this period nonetheless saw important battles, the course of which the author, as usual, recounts in detail (Oudenarde, Malplaquet, the sieges of Lille and Douai, the Spanish campaign with the battles of Saragossa, Brihuega, and Villaviciosa). Saint-Simon continues to create vivid portraits of French commanders: some displayed miracles of valor, others, out of vanity, took credit for the achievements of others, and still others demonstrated laziness and arrogance, as a result of which battles could be lost before they even began.
In addition to the War of the Spanish Succession, other significant events that took place in Europe during that period are not forgotten: the Battle of Poltava (1709) during the Great Northern War, the continuation of the anti-Habsburg uprising of the Hungarian people, the birth of the Prince of Asturias (1707), and the death of Cardinal Portocarrero (1709) in Spain. Surprisingly, against the backdrop of the war, France's dire economic situation, and the fierce infighting between court factions, the birth of the future King Louis XV was a trivial event. One of the features of this volume, distinguishing it from its predecessors, is the author's verbatim reproduction of letters from various individuals and their exhaustive analysis.
Saint-Simon's text is accompanied by extensive notes, genealogical tables, illustrations, and other materials. This volume also includes a scholarly article on England during the War of the Spanish Succession. It allows for a vivid comparison of the memoirist's depiction of the state of affairs in France, under the rule of an absolute monarchy, and in England, which had embarked on a path to modernization in virtually all spheres of life (economics, politics, and society). Another article examines one of Saint-Simon's recounted episodes—a walk between Louis XIV and the banker Samuel Bernard in the gardens of Marly.
