The second volume of the Memoirs of the Duc de Saint-Simon (1675 - 1755; Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon; French Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon) covers events from 1701 (the last, as the memoirist put it, happy year in the life of Louis XIV) to 1707. In 1701, the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) began, and Louis de Rouvroy de Saint-Simon describes and analyzes in detail the large and small battles in various theaters of war in Germany, Flanders, Spain, and Northern Italy: The land battles of Carpi and Chiari (1701), of Luzzar and Friedlingen (1702), of Höchstedt (Blenheim) (1703 and 1704) and Speyer (1703), of Ramillies (1706) and Almansa (1707), the Imperial sortie at Cremona (1702), the battles of Barcelona (1705) and Turin (1706), countless sieges of cities, the naval battles at Vigo Bay (1702) and Gibraltar (1704), and much more. The author paints colorful portraits of French commanders of high and low rank; he discusses patriotism; he vividly shows how the personal qualities of commanders and officials responsible for the supply of troops, influenced the outcome of battles and entire military campaigns, during which bravery was next to cowardice, and loyalty to duty - with treachery. The memoirist's literary talent is on full display as he recounts the sorrowful defeats that haunted France and the rare victories of those years. In addition to the characters already involved in the events covered in the first volume of Louis de Rouvroy de Saint-Simon's Memoirs (1691-1701), many other personalities who came to the forefront of history at crucial moments also appear in the narrative for the first time or become much more active: generals Eugene of Savoy and his cousin Ludwig of Baden, the Duke of Marlborough and a host of French marshals, Archduke Charles, Princess Orsini, Ferenc Rakoczy, King Charles XII of Sweden, Anthony Heinzius, Queen Anne of England, the Duke of Savoy and the Elector of Bavaria.... Appeal to the vicissitudes of "big" and "small" history dictates the multidimensional narrative, so large-scale historical events are interspersed in the "Memoirs" with private episodes from the life of the court and individual families, reports of political squabbles and intrigues, historical anecdotes. Saint-Simon deals in detail with issues of ceremonial (this time - Spanish), the relationship between Church and state, trials, including those held with his personal participation. The edition contains two scholarly articles (on the literary side of Saint-Simon's Memoirs and on the War of the Spanish Succession, viewed from a "Spanish" perspective), extensive notes, an annotated index of names, genealogical tables, geographical maps, illustrations, and other auxiliary materials.
