Italian laborer Markovaldo lives in a big city, huddled in a cramped apartment with a grouchy wife and a bunch of kids. He grew up in the countryside and loves nature, so he looks everywhere for traces of living life, he carefully observes flowers and trees, rains and animals. And Marcovaldo tries to live in the city the way he lived in the countryside - only this is impossible, and he invariably gets into a mess.
Because of the summer stuffiness, Markovaldo decides to sleep in the fresh air, but all night he is woken up by city noises and lights. Or he takes the kids fishing, carefully chooses the place with the cleanest water, and then it turns out that there was an accident at the paint factory upstream. Or he is impatiently waiting for the mushrooms to ripen on a green patch of land near the bus stop - and finds himself in the same hospital ward with everyone who has tried these mushrooms. Each story ends with an unexpected tragicomic twist that both adults and children will appreciate.
