"Little Farmer" - the fifth book of the famous autobiographical epic of the famous American writer Laura Ingles Wilder. It unvarnished describes the childhood of Almanzo Wilder, the future husband of the writer. Reading this book, it is impossible not to compare the way of life of children of the late XIX and early XXI centuries. Days little Almanzo filled with hard, sometimes exhausting labor, not carefree fun and boyish adventures. But the boy does not worry about it at all. Hard-working, honest and inquisitive Almanzo is a born farmer, although he is not yet 10 years old. He can do almost everything that adults do: harness steers and carry logs on them, milk a cow, churn butter, shear sheep, saw cubes of ice and build a glacier from them, plant, weed and save crops from frosts - you can't list everything. The main thing is that these "adult" duties do not weigh him down. Almanzo fulfills them as a matter of course and even with pleasure, and also manages to study at school. And although his grades are high and he has a chance to continue his studies and in the future radically change his life, Almanzo chooses the difficult but free and independent life of a farmer. The book resembles a vividly written encyclopedia of the life of American farmers, reads easily, with unflagging interest, and disposes to reflect on labor and idleness and comparison of times and mores. Will be of interest to teens ages 12-14.
