How wide this world is! - exclaims a man named Yonosuke, who lives in seventeenth-century "self-isolated" Japan. Although contact with the outside world is minimized, Japan at this time is undergoing rapid changes, leaving the medieval era - laying the foundations of what we today consider to be the peculiarities of Japanese traditional culture. Yonosuke's wanderings through the cities and backwoods of the country, as well as his countless romances with women, form the crux of the story. This book, built as a life story of a man who gave himself entirely to the passion of love, was written by Ihara Saikaku (1642-1693), a classic of Japanese literature, whose name in world literature is often put on a par with Boccaccio and Cervantes. Saikaku's books have already been translated into Russian, but not this one - the first and most famous, "The History of the Love Affairs of a Lonely Man" (1682). The special world of love quarters, closely connected with theater, poetry, engraving, is shown here from the point of view of a mocking and wise observer. The illustrations for the first edition, presumably made by the author himself, provide another perspective on the life of the "man of this world" - as the hero's name, Yonosuke, is translated.
