According to his contemporaries, Ivan Shmelev became "the most Russian" of the émigré writers, expressing the "profound truth" about Russia, creating a beautiful and luminous image of it, purified of coincidences, inspired by a higher meaning and faith. Transcending the boundaries of national literature, Shmelev's work acquired universal significance; his works gained renown throughout Europe and were translated into dozens of languages. The writer was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The novel "The Lord's Summer" was written during his years of exile and was initially published as separate essays imbued with nostalgia for his lost homeland. A separate edition of "The Lord's Summer," consisting of three parts: "Holidays," "Joys," and "Sorrows," was published in Paris in 1948 and was recognized as the writer's pinnacle. "I show the face of Holy Rus', which I carry in my heart..." Shmelev wrote. “Russia, which looked into my childish soul.”
