In Nikolai Gumilev's poem "My Readers" you can find the lines:
"Lieutenant, who drove gunboats Under the fire of enemy batteries, The whole night over the southern sea read me my poems in memory..." This lieutenant, or rather failed midshipman, who became during the Civil War years military commander of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Fleet, was none other than Sergei Kolbasiev. A significant meeting with the poet took place in 1921, and soon the military sailor became one of the apprentices in Gumilev's "Shop of poets". The master introduced Kolbasyev into the world of great literature, in which he earned widespread recognition of readers as one of the classics of Russian Marinist. Versatile interests and gifts helped Sergei Kolbasiev to prove himself in the most diverse spheres of activity - in diplomatic work, in journalism, to become a recognized authority in the world of jazz and a famous popularizer of achievements of science and technology. His life was cut short in 1937 after his arrest with the standard charge of counter-revolutionary activity. Rehabilitation in 1956 returned the writer's honest name, and his works have since been repeatedly republished and enjoy the undying love of those who have connected their lives with the sea or dream of becoming a sailor.
